The Big Pine Lady Warriors volleyball squad headed over the mountain Tuesday and came home with a win over the Beatty Hornets.
“Both teams played really well,” said Big Pine coach Shelly Snoderly. “The Warriors just wanted it more.”
Gena Lewis started the Warriors out with a 4-point lead and 1 ace in game one. The lead went to 8-5 with Sienna Gutierrez at the service line.
The Hornets tried to hang in, according to Snoderly, but Erin Lind and Anna Huston were serving aces. The Warriors were ahead 17-10 when Gutierrez laid down 4 more points for Big Pine.
“Melissa (Barlow) helped us out with aggressive play at the net,” said Snoderly. Big Pine took game one 25-15.
Lewis started the Warriors off strong in game two with 3 points on 2 aces at the line. The Hornets went ahead 5-8. Big Pine stayed close, then re-took the lead late in the game.
Gutierrez came up to the service line with the Warriors behind 17-22. She laid down 5 aces; the Warriors scored 6 points for a 23-22 lead but lost the ball back to Beatty who finished off with the 23-25 win.
Kaylee Simpson started game three for the Warriors with 5 points and 2 aces from the line, giving Big Pine a 6-1 lead.
“The girls again were aggressive on the net, intimidating the Lady Hornets with 19 attacks, and 5 kills,” said Snoderly. “We were on the net when we needed to be and then covered very well when the Lady Hornets were up for spiking.” Big Pine took the win, 25-21.
The Warriors came out of the gate fast in game four, gaining the side-out before the Hornets could get on the scoreboard. Lewis went on a 6-point run on 6 aces.
Up by 8-1 and with Simpson back on the line, the Warriors kept widening the lead. Gutierrez was white hot at the line with 3 more aces to give Big Pine a 14-2 lead.
The Hornets regained their footing to close the gap, but it was too little, too late and Big Pine took the game 25-19 and the match 3-1.
The Warriors travel to Sparks, Nev. to take on Exel Christian on Saturday.
