Tuesday night in Lone Pine was a total scream-fest. The Lone Pine Lady Golden Eagles took on the Silver Valley Trojans in a marathon volleyball match that went down to the fifth and final tie-breaking game.
The Eagles lost, by a hair, in a match that should bode well for this season. Lone Pine hit 90 of its 94 serves with 14 aces; the teamâs passing kept the Trojans scrambling throughout the match.
âWe played a great overall match, team-wise,â said coach Mel Joseph. âAt times our hesitation and communication getting to balls allowed the opposition to stay in the match.â
The Eagles took an early lead in game one, 5-2, but the Trojans set up a points run to tie the game 5-5. From that point on it was a battle royale. The Trojans took advantage of an Eagle weak spot to go ahead 7-10, but Lone Pine slammed that door and the game went back to a nearly point-for-point match. With the Trojans ahead by 5, their biggest points margin of the game, the Eagles, with Shawni Patton at the line, tied the game 17-17. Neither team could get a 2-point lead until the final points of the game when Emma Howe scored giving Lone Pine the game at 26-24.
The Trojans rallied in game two and the Eagles slumped, losing the game 15-25.
The Eagles dominated the early going in game three with a 20-13 advantage. Then, they saw the lead dwindle to 20-19. Lone Pine battled through a long volley for the 21st point that looked like it could be the teamâs turning point, but the Trojans were on a roll and went ahead 1-2 with a 24-26 win.
Game four was all Lone Pine. The Eagles blitzed the Trojans early taking a 17-7 lead. Silver Valley was back on its heels and never recovered. The match was tied 2-2 with Lone Pineâs 25-12 win in game four.
Then came the tie-breaker. Lone Pine came on strong with a 5-point run on Pattonâs serves for a 6-2 lead. Then Silver Valley did the same to take the lead away 6-9. The Eagles couldnât make up that 3-point deficit and went down fighting 12-15.
âWe battled to the end,â said Joseph. âThis was definitely a someone wins and someone has to lose kind of match. Our entire team should be proud of their effort, I was.â
