In 2004 Tanda found her way to Independence, working for the Inyo County Planning Department, rising to the position of Senior Planner. Tanda lived in Independence on Foreman Row and enjoyed horseback riding in the high sierra and special get-togethers with her friends. She was especially fond of the pie at Rock Creek Lodge, and of Dryer’s Ice Cream at the pizza shop in Bishop. In the last few years, she developed the taste for coffee. Tanda became active in the Puppy Club helping to raise Niles in preparation for guide dog school. On occasion, Tanda would write articles for The Inyo Register about Niles the guide dog puppy in training. Taking drives throughout Inyo and Mono counties with a close friend was a pleasure for her. Taking these drives, living and working in the Eastern Sierra all contributed to converting Tanda to a lover of these stark landscapes we call home.
In late December 2012, Tanda’s mother broke a vertebrae in her back, causing Tanda to return home to care for her mother. After aiding her mother’s limited recovery, Tanda worked a seasonal job at a nearby resort and planned her return to the Owens Valley in September after the summer season. Tanda’s friends in Lone Pine, Independence and Bishop wanted Tanda to return so much that they offered her lodging, in one case of up to unlimited duration in the effort to help Tanda re-establish her presence in the Owens Valley. Upon her return, Tanda looked forward to possibly writing again for The Inyo Register.
While planning her return to the Owens Valley, Tanda passed away unexpectedly. She is survived by her friends at the County and in Independence, friends at the Puppy Club, and of course by Niles too.
While you can take the girl out of the west, you can’t take the west out of the girl, so Tanda’s ashes will make the return to the Owens Valley and will be spread in the high country.
In lieu of cards or flowers, please plant flowers or a tree in Tanda’s memory. Or, you may make a donation to Guide Dogs for the Blind by sending an email to email@example.com.
Tanda Gretz was loved by many in the Eastern Sierra and will be missed by all. A celebration of Tanda’s life will be announced at a later date.
