With the aid of social media and concerned citizens, Mammoth Lakes Police officers apprehended 23-year-old bank robbery suspect Ryan Ward, of Bishop.
According to the Mammoth Lakes Police Department, the Mammoth branch of Bank of America was robbed by a male suspect at about 11 a.m. Monday. Officials said the robber presented a note to a bank teller, claiming he had a gun. The teller handed over an undisclosed amount of cash, and was able to trigger the bank’s silent alarm as the perpetrator left the building.
The suspect fled before police arrived at the bank.
The follow-up investigation was led by Detective Doug Hornbeck. The bank was able to provide surveillance photos to the MLPD and Hornbeck and other officers recognized that the suspect may be Ward, a local resident they had dealt with in the past.
In in effort to gather information on the robbery, the Mammoth Lakes PD posted a press release and a still image from the security footage on its Facebook wall.
Almost immediately, residents in Inyo and Mono counties began speculating on Facebook about the identity of the individual in the security footage, with many suggesting that the suspect was indeed Ward.
