Hiker found dead after 30-foot fall

FRIDAY, AUG. 23, 2013 – A multiagency search and rescue effort to locate Matthew Mooney, a 47 year old man from Swall Meadows, concluded yesterday late Thursday afternoon when Mooney was located deceased.
According to the Inyo County Sheriff's Department, Search and rescue team members discovered Mooney in a chute above Tamarac Lake; he is believed to have fallen approximately 30 feet.
SAR teams have been searching for Mooney since about 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 20, after Inyo County Sheriff’s Dispatch was notified that Mooney was overdue to return from a day hike in the Rock Creek area. Mooney’s last communication came around noon on Tuesday, when he contacted family from Round Valley Peak and said he would be home in a couple of hours.
Search efforts included a California Highway Patrol helicopter out of Apple Valley, Mono County Search and Rescue and China Lake Mountain Rescue, as well as Inyo County SAR.
