Michael Allen Smith
Born Dec. 18, 1959 at the Northern Inyo Hospital, Michael Allen Smith, the son of James Ware Smith and Avis Marie Smith, passed away at the Bishop Care Center at approximately 5 a.m., Sunday, Aug. 4 at age 53 due to melanoma cancer. Mike has been battling cancer for the past year.
Mike has three brothers, Jeff, Steve and David, all raised in Bishop California. Mike was blessed with three children, Jennifer, Denny and Amber, and has eight grandchildren.
Mike worked many cooking jobs either in the kitchen roasting Benâs Broasted Chicken, or assisting the cooks at the Paiute Palace as well as cooking a meal for the residents at the Progress House in Bishop.
Mike had a passion for collecting coins from his teenage years. He used to have his mother bring home bags of pennies from the bank so he could find that rare wheat-backed penny to collect. Then on to his adult years the passion grew and he was buying and trading coins from various coin shops either in Los Angeles, Reno or at the local shops in Bishop and the surrounding areas.
Mike had a friendly smile and a laugh that is felt with warmth and joy, not to mention a great sense of humor and passion for chocolate, following the Smith tradition.
Mike loved driving his truck to Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Reno. Mike was always up for an adventure from collecting tree trunks to chop and sell wood to playing the slot machine at Circus Circus. Mike was a whiz with numbers and would often impress the family with remembering birthdays not only of siblings and children but extended family as well. Christmas was Mikeâs favorite time of year, as he always a generous spirit and he loved to eat good home-cooked meals. Mike was a great gentle guy and will be missed and remembered by many friends and family surrounding the Owens Valley, which he loved dearly.
In lieu of flowers, the Smith family prefers that a donation be made to the Progress House/County of Mental Health, P.O. Box 448, Bishop, CA 93514; write âin honor of Mike Smithâ in the Memo Line. Thank you! A memorial service will be held at a later date.
