Former SAR member missing in Rock Creek area

WEDNESDAY, AUG. 21, 2013 – A multi-agency search and rescue effort was launched at about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday night after Inyo County Sheriff's dispatch was notified of an overdue hiker.
According to Sheriff's Public Information Officer Carma Roper, 47 year-old Swall Meadows resident Matthew Mooney set out Tuesday for a day hike in the Rock Creek area. Mooney contacted family via cell phone at about noon Tuesday, saying he was returning from Round Valley Peak and would be home in a couple hours. He has not been seen or heard from since.
Mooney is described as an experienced backcountry hiker and former SAR member. He has short gray hair and blue eyes, is six feet and 180 pounds. He was last seen wearing dark green pants and a mustard colored jacket.
Anyone hiking in the Wheeler Ridge area who may have seen Mooney is asked to contact the Sheriff's Department at (760) 873-0383.
Assisting in the search is a California Highway Patrol helicopter out of Apple Valley, Mono County Search and Rescue and China Lake Mountain Rescue.
