Cottage food industry taxes decided in Southern Inyo

Thanks to the May 23 approval of a business tax exemption by the Southern Inyo Healthcare District Board of Directors, Cottage Food Operators will pay a greatly-reduced business tax. Saving $400 annually on that tax will allow home-based food businesses more operating capital with which to produce breads, tamales, teas, dried herbs and fruits, pastas and cereals, syrups and snacks and more for sale to the public. Cottage Food Operation owners got several important greenlights as local boards voted in exemptions to assist them on the road to becoming legitimate home-based food businesses.
The boards of directors for Southern Inyo Healthcare District and City of Bishop Planning Commission’s recent agenda items have included reforms to their commercial tax exemption rules and city zoning ordinances, respectively.
AB 1616, known as the Cottage Food Law, went into effect statewide on Jan. 1 to help fledgling CFOs operate in a more affordable, flexible and streamlined way than other businesses. Several regulations have been in the process of undergoing amendments to help facilitate CFO owners’ use of the law.
