The Chuckawallees and Bad Company faced off Tuesday night in the C Coed Division of Bishop’s Adult Softball league. Bad Company came in undefeated with the Chuckawallees right behind them at 1-1.
Chuckawallee took a couple of innings to warm up, but when they did, Bad Company went reeling with a 3-8 deficit. Then it was Bad Company’s turn to fight back, making the winning run in the bottom of the sixth for the 11-10 win.
Bad Company took out the top of Chuckawallee’s batting order in short order in the top of the first, then put the offense to work.
Bad’s James Napoles doubled; Nanette Johnson walked and Natalie Vega brought in the first run with a single turned into a double on an error. Wyatt Gaunt slammed a line drive single through the infield to score Johnson and Heather Barlow hit a sacrifice grounder to bring in run number 3.
Top of two, Chuckawallee continued to send the ball straight into Bad Company mitts, three-up/three-down. But, by the bottom of the second, Chuckawallee’s defense put a cork in Bad’s run-fest, taking two runners out at first and stopping a Kris Hohag run at home plate.
Fortified by their defense, the Chuckawallees poured on 4 runs in the top of three. With 1 out, Mona Amode and Leon Eddy had back-to-back singles, Margaret Cortez brought Amode home with a single. James Spratt, III stepped up with a single on a fielding error that scored the second run. Eric Eddy took advantage of fielding flubs, scrambling to third and bringing in 2 more runs to give the team a 3-4 lead.
The momentum stayed with Chuckawallee through the third inning. The team’s third baseman caught a line drive for an out, then lobbed the ball to second to take out Bad’s runner and end the inning with no harm and no runs.
Chuckawallee kept the pressure on in the top of the fourth. With 1 out and the bases loaded, Robert Eddy hit a 3-RBI triple, then scored on a Ryan Lent single, extending the lead 3-8.
Bad Company’s bats came back to life in the bottom of the fourth. With 1 out, Heather Barlow and Derek Sierra on base, Hohag hit a huge 3-RBI in-the-park home run, whittling the lead down to 6-8. Now it was Bad’s turn to ratchet up the defense, fielding a pop fly, tagging a runner at second and ending the threat of two runners on base with a quick out at first.
Bad Company wasn’t done yet. With Johnson and Vega on base, Gaunt doubled in a run; Heather Barlow brought two home on a double and Sierra’s double brought in the final run of the inning, handing the team a 10-8 lead.
Chuckawallee was quick to even the score. First up, Amode gained second on a fielding error and Spratt hit an in-the-park homer for a 10-10 tie. Chuckawallee threatened to take the lead but Bad got 2 outs, allowed 2 hits, then snagged the final pop fly.
Going into the final inning, Bad’s Ginger Rogers singled on an error, Napoles hit a line-drive single and Johnson brought Rogers home for the game-ending run and the 11-10 win.
