Joan Simone Toles Darrel Turner passed away quietly in her sleep at NNRH in Elko, Nev. on March 13, 2013.
Born to Herbert Leroy Toles and Josephine Marie Toles in Grand Junction, Colo. on Aug. 22, 1937, she was raised in Death Valley Junction/Amargosa Clay Camp area from 1937-1952, moving to Ridgecrest/Homestead and later to Bishop.
She graduated from Bishop High School in 1955. While in Bishop, she met and married her first husband, Dale Darrel. Dale served in the military and they were stationed in Yokohama, Japan for three years where her first son, Lyal Stanley Darrel, was born. Dale died a hero trying to save two of his fellow sailors/friends from drowning.
Joan later met and married Jack Donald Turner on Aug. 3, 1962 in Las Vegas where she gave birth to her first daughter, Simone Marie Turner. They resided in Las Vegas for 31 years, eventually moving to Ely, Nev. for six years, then on up to Elko/Spring Creek in 1999, to the present day.
Her career as a graphic artist spanned more than 30 years, as she worked for the Las Vegas Review Journal, the Nifty Nickel and various Las Vegas entertainment publications. She was an extremely talented historical artist of the Great Basin, of antiquities, wild life and still life. She favored working with pen and pencil and watercolors. She was also an extraordinary and the best mother in the world! She loved to travel and traveled all over the world, from Tokyo, Japan to Cairo, Egypt. She had a passion for dance, participating and performing in a tap dance club here in Elko as well as performing for the Elko Country Art Club, of which she was an outstanding member for 14 years.
Beloved wife, mother, sister, aunt and friend to all who knew her, she will long be remembered for her spirit, love and light.
She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Jack D. Turner; sister, Jean Toles; son, Lyal S. Darrel; daughter, Simone M. Turner; niece Corina Winters; and her uncles, Jerry and Rob Toles.
