Darlis Shirley Nakken, age 77 and long time resident of Bishop, passed away Wednesday, March 6, 2013 at the Renown Medical Center in Reno.
Shirley was born in Grass Valley on Aug. 25, 1935 to Floyd and Dorothy (Lutz) Dorrell and was the oldest of three children. A 59-year marriage began Jan. 17, 1954 when Shirley and John eloped to Reno. They moved to Bishop in 1965.
Shirley enjoyed gardening, was an avid bowler and served as secretary of the Wednesday night bowling league for more than three decades. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Shirley is survived by her husband, John; daughters, Judi (Mike) New of Big Pine and Debbie (Dan) Appelbaum of San Luis Obispo; grandchildren, Kelly (Brian) Wilson of Carson City, Ian Appelbaum of San Luis Obispo, Lyndsy (Cory) Alford of Twin Falls, Idaho and Sean Appelbaum of San Luis Obispo; and five great-grandchildren.
Shirley is preceded in death by her daughter, Donna Graves, her two brothers, Dennis and Donald, and her parents, Floyd and Dorothy.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 23, 2013 at the East Line Street Cemetery, followed by a light lunch at the Hinek residence, 1642 Valley View Drive in Bishop.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
