Job fair caters to careers not just jobs

Potential employees met dozens of employers and employment services professionals at a recent two-county job fair, where opportunities ranged from entry- to professional-level and local to global.
Many job openings were posted at Career Connections 2013 this past Thursday, but education and career track development was the main focus of the job fair. Two hundred-plus attendees and 27 employers and agencies mingled at the Cerro Coso Community College Bishop campus.
Attendees were of an eclectic mix with everyone from retirees, there to dispense career advice, to student groups from Big Pine and Palisade Glacier, Lone Pine, Lee Vining and Bishop high schools.

THE YOUTH MARKET
Terry Russi and Jim Jennings, two retired Bureau of Land Management professionals were on hand to steer youth to careers with BLM, USFS and other city, county, state and federal government agencies. Joining California Conservation Corps is a good start, Russi said it permits youth to explore California, meet coworkers of diverse backgrounds and learn responsible teamwork. Young people can do things they won’t be able to later in life, Jennings said. For example, he helped build 80 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail and did a lot of learning a long the way. Along those lines, there is Inyo-Mono Advocates for Community Action’s summer Eastern Sierra Youth Conservation Corps program for 16- to 18-year-olds, who would be working on outdoor BLM, USFS and communy garden projects. Inyo County Health and Human Services offers 16- to 19-year-olds work, up to 20 hours per week, in the Workforce Investment Act summer employment program. CAREER DEVELOPMENT
Several agencies at the job fair offered job skills and career development trainings. California Indian Manpower Consortium is recruiting for its youth program and provides job search services and vocational training for Native Americans. CIMC encourages people to continuously develop themselves, “to develop the local and therefore the county workforce,” Workforce Development Coordinator Darcia Blackdeer-Lent said. Owens Valley Career Development Center’s Career Education Program provides vocational training for Native American students through Cerro Coso College, explained Career Counselor Joannie Hanson. More trainings are planned. The main job fair sponsor, Eastern Sierra Employment Collaborators Group, will be announcing workshops for application, resume and cover letter writing; interview skills; and finding work with and applying to State of California and Federal agencies.
Attendee evaluations of the job fair “were overwhelmingly positive. Everyone appreciated the opportunity for networking, liked the location, and was impressed by the turn-out,” Anderson said. “We were “pleased to have produced this event with virtually no budget, but lots of in-kind contributions and donations of time. Especially significant was the donation of the Cerro Coso Community College Great Hall, and the resulting ability to relate job qualifications to local educational opportunities,” Anderson said.
Follow-up workshops will be advertised on job search skills such as filling out applications and preparing resumes, and navigating the federal job search and application system.

NOW HIRING
Several employers have a large number of job openings posted.

Northern Inyo Hospital is another employer in need of new staff. NIH is looking for an IT service desk technician, IT application technician, a director of pharmacy, a staff pharmacist, surgery and labor/delivery registered nurses, relief RN shift supervisors and phlebotomy technicians. McDonalds owner Kevin Mazzu said, since it’s the only global brand company in the area, McDonalds employees can go from “working crew to management,” locally, statewide, countrywide or even worldwide; opportunities range from a part- to full-time to career path.
