Janice E. Groff (Sweger)
Janice Groff, 75, passed away peacefully following a long illness on Jan. 15, 2013 in Brea.
Janice was born May 15, 1937 to Lewis E. Sweger and Eunice (Dixie) Bright in Mojave. Three years later her brother, Larry Paul Sweger followed. Janice’s childhood years were spent in and around the Lone Pine/Big Pine area with countless hours spent at the family’s silver mines. This began her lifelong love of rocks, minerals, geodes, science and nature and her collection of antique purple glass.
Later, Lewis became a truck driver for the oil companies and Dixie a homemaker. They relocated their family to Rivera, in Southern California where Janice lettered in her beloved sports of swimming and diving and graduated from Whittier High School in 1955.
On June 30, 1956 after a three-year engagement, Janice married Walter Lee Groff, formerly of Lancaster, Penn., and began her role of wife and mother to Walt’s two young sons, Larry and Walter Groff, Jr. In 1957 Janice and Walt welcomed their son, Dana and in 1963 their daughter, Sherry to complete their family. After a few years in Rivera, La Habra and La Habra Heights, the family moved to their final residence in Brea, since 1965.
Janice lovingly raised her family while pursuing a career in bank operations; she was a longtime employee of Bank of America and later, Great Western Bank. Janice was a dedicated, hard-working, loyal employee and found great pleasure in earning herself an early retirement, a full 20 years before her death.
Her retirement was enjoyed by spending time with her family, reading and puttering in her garden. She enjoyed keeping in touch with her extended family to the north; aunt, June Bagwell; cousins, Sally Topham, Sharon Pauer and her husband Kurt, Travis and his wife Julie McRoberts, John Bright and his wife Phyllis and her few close friends from childhood or work.
Her legacy is the family she dearly loved and leaves behind: her son, Dana Groff and his wife, Michelle and grandson, Jason; daughter, Sherry Jones, her husband, Mike, grandson, Sammy and granddaughter, Lily; stepson, Larry Groff; and half-sister, Debra Thompson.
Janice is preceded in death and joins her husband, Walt; stepson, Walter Jr., his daughter, Faith Marie; her parents, Lewis and Dixie; her brother, Larry, her grandparents, Thatcher Lee Bright and Eunice Pearl Burns (maternal) and Lewis Wesley and Daisy Sweger; step-grandmother, Anna Sweger (paternal); and beloved uncles, aunts and cousins.
She will be missed dearly and lovingly remembered for her gentle nature, kind blue eyes and compassionate heart.
Private graveside services to be held in Big Pine.
