Sterling ‘Steve’ H. McCaughan

Steve McCaughan, a 28-year resident of Olancha, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family and dearest friends on Jan. 7, 2013. Born in Shelton, Wash. on March 1, 1943 to Muriel and Melvin McCaughan, he was raised in the Pacific Northwest by Muriel and Lewis Withers.

Steve joined the Navy in 1960 and served as an Yeoman on the U.S.S. Kearsarge until he was eventually stationed at China Lake Naval Weapons Center and honorably discharge in 1967.

Our father worked as a High Power Lineman for Southern California Edison and also in public works for NWC. Our father wore many hats, from being a deep-sea fisherman in Kodiak, Alaska to cowboyin’ with the many amazing cattlemen of Owens Valley. Other than Daddy, the hat he wore best was that of a friend, always there to listen, always there to give and always searching for the good in everyone he met.

His friendship and love will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

Steve is survived by his brother Mike (Nancy) McCaughan of Denison, Texas; daughters, Annette (Bob) Fella of Churchville, Md., Julie (Jerry) Coles of Bakersfield, Denise (Brooke) Veltman of Hampton Va., and Stephanie (Billy) Meeks of Ridgecrest. He is also survived by his stepsons, Christian (Jaime) Knopf and Sam Knopf of Ridgecrest; and his dearest friend who was like a beloved son, John (April) Hunter of Olancha; as well as 11 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Muriel Dodge; father, Melvin McCaughan; stepfather Lewis Withers; and daughter, Michelle Arradondo.

The family would like to thank all the staff at Ridgecrest Regional Hospital for their exceptional and compassionate care.

In lieu of flowers donations in his name can be made to Crossroads Missions and sent to Crossroads Community Church. He always wanted to take a trip with this group to help build houses for those in need. We want to thank all his friends and family for their love and support.
