Phillip Dean Smith



Born Dec. 21, 1924 in Sacramento, 51-year Bishop resident Phillip Dean Smith passed away Dec. 18, 2012 at Northern Inyo Hospital in Bishop. He was 87.

Dean was the Inyo-Mono Farm Advisor for 28 years until retirement in 1989. He was active in the Lion’s Club, Hospice Advisory Board, Senior Center Board, Fair Board and the Salvation Army Cup of Cold Water Food Bank. He was also a member of St. Timothy’s Anglican Church. 

His survivors include special friend and companion, Mable Haigh; daughters, Sherri, Bonnie and Joni; sister, Shirley Hothkiss; cousin, Bill and Fae Gerkin; sister-in-law, Shirley Scheel; brother-in-law, James Givens; seven grandchildren, Mark, Heather, Lisa, Patrick, Clint, Khrista and Joey; six great-grandchildren, Haley, Quinn, Barren, Kendall, Abagail and Pennelope; and numerous nieces and nephews. 

Dean was preceded in death by his wife of 40 years, Bettyjo; two sons, Denis and Casey; parents, Charles and Valentine Smith; and brother, Wayne Smith. 

Visitation was held Friday, Dec. 21, at Brune Mortuary. Memorial Services were held Saturday, Dec. 22 at St. Timothy’s Anglican Church.
