The 2012-13 Mammoth Lady Huskies basketball team is young; with the experience gained during what is developing into a rough season, they could be a force to be reckoned with in coming years.
This is a polite way of leading into a recap of the Huskies’ cataclysmic loss to the Lone Pine Lady Golden Eagles Tuesday, Dec. 18.
The Eagles have had a deadly defense all season and the Huskies got a strong taste of that ferocity in Lone Pine. With the exception of senior point guard Desarae Coats, the offense has been tentative. But not Tuesday night.
The Eagles’ shooters didn’t exactly explode out of the starting gate. Lone Pine put up 4 quick points for the early lead; Coats added two more buckets to Mammoth’s one to round out the first quarter at 8-2.
Coats continued to dominate through the half. After a 3-pointer from the Huskies to narrow the gap 8-5, Coats went on a rampage with 12 rapid-fire points in seven minutes.
The Huskies’ offense isn’t strong, right now, but any chance Mammoth had to score was snatched away before they could pass half court. To say Lone Pine executed a full-court press is an understatement. A full-court demolition derby would be more accurate.
The Eagles were stealing the ball out from Mammoth’s little Husky hands before the point guard could get out of the low post area, then turn, shoot, score and start all over again. It was a good night to be an Eagle; not so good for the Huskies.
By the time Lone Pine headed to the locker room, the score was a lopsided 28-5.
The Eagles kept up the pressure through the third quarter, holding Mammoth scoreless.
The offense sharpened up with tentative shooters morphing into serious scorers. Maureen Cariou lit up the scoreboard with 18 points; all seven players came away with points added to their stats.
Going into the final quarter, Lone Pine had a 38-5 lead. Mammoth had one more basket to its credit; Lone Pine wasn’t quite finished, adding another four baskets and one free throw for a decisive 47-7 win.
The Lady Eagles have a break through the holidays. The scheduled game in Lee Vining Thursday, Dec. 20 was cancelled.
Desert Mountain League action picks up again Friday, Jan. 11 with a road trip to Mojave to take on the Mustangs.
