Broncos hoop action

The Bishop Broncos opened their run at the Sutro Classic basketball tournament in Dayton, Nev. with a win Thursday night over the host Dayton Dust Devils, 54-50.
Bishop was down by 9 at halftime, but came back with a vengeance in the second.
Dayton’s defense focused heavily on Cy Scott opening opportunities for other players to step up.
Kyle Miller caught fire from the outside, giving the Broncos the spark and momentum in the second half.
Roman Amisone took advantage in the paint and off offensive rebounds.
“It’s always an important experience in the pre-season to get a tough, hard-fought close win,” said coach Ben Arcularius. “I was proud of the way the team responded in the second half. Anthony Martinez, Carl Olsen and Thomas Montoya all had solid games.”
The final championship games of the 8-team classic are being held today.

The Lady Broncos are just around the corner at the High Sierra Winter Challenge tourney held in Spanish Springs, Nev.
Bishop came out swinging in its first game against Elko, Nev. Thursday, scoring 18 points in the first quarter to take an 18-15 lead.
The Lady Broncos went flat in the second, scoring only 2 points to fall behind 20-25.
Elko continued on a roll, outscoring Bishop 13-2 in the third quarter, putting the Lady Broncos behind by 18 points. Bishop rallied to within 11 points with three minutes left in the game, but took a 32-47 loss against the Division 1A school.

The varsity basketball teams continue tournament action through today. Back on the home front, the Bronco JVs are hosting girls’ and boys’ tourneys today with the first games starting at 9 a.m.
All four teams travel to Lone Pine to take on the Golden Eagles this Tuesday with the girls JV game starting at 3 p.m.
