Wesley Leon Walters

1957-2012

Wes Walters, our beloved, left us for another, hopefully easier path on Sept. 11, 2012. A resident of Bishop for 23 years, he was 54 years old. He fought for several years and finally lost a battle with a chronic, painful and increasingly debilitating sickness. Some people knew him as “Joe” of Joe’s Garage. Wes was born in Riverside and lived there and in Lake Arrowhead, before his Dad took the family to Mojave. He dreamed of retiring to Montana.

He loved cars and boats and motorcycles. His greatest love was auto racing, but   he was unable to pursue this sport fully as a young man because of family obligations, and then he became too sick in later years. He also rode and raced dirt bikes when he was young. He was a Master Auto Mechanic for 30 years and loved his work. He was very proud of recovering from a serious shoulder injury and returning to work as a mechanic. He was a Clint Eastwood and AC/DC fan, and made killer chocolate chip cookies and pecan pie.

Wes was an excellent water skier and fisherman – in fishing he was second only to his wife Joann. They made several trips to Baja California and caught dorado, yellowtail, yellowfin, pargo and more. The high point of his fishing career was when he caught, photographed, and released a 6-foot-plus sailfish out of Loreto with Captain Jesus Davis.

Wes and Joann also enjoyed hiking, fishing and camping here at home and Lake Isabella, the Kern River, even Nevada, Montana and Washington.

Wes shared his Birthday with his and Joann’s respective maternal grandmothers, and shared a lot of their personality traits.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Beverly Russell and Darrell Walters, and baby sister, Debra.

He is survived by his wife, Joann Lijek; children, Debra, Hilary, Warren and Natlie; stepson, Leon Beadle; grandchildren, Tyler, Jessie, Chris, Marion, Freddy, Adreon and Maya; numerous nieces and nephews, and sister Barbra.

A celebration of life will be announced and held at a later date.
