Collene Pool

1939-2012

Collene Pool, longtime Bishop resident, passed away Aug. 30, 2012. She was 72.

Born Sept. 12, 1939 in Tulare, Calif., the first of three children of the Rev. Malcolm and Gwendolyn Long.

Rev. Long’s ministry took the family to Los Angeles where Collene attended El Rancho High School. It was there, while on a blind date, that she met Danny Pool.

They would marry in December 1957.

During the 1960s, Dan, Collene and family enjoyed vacationing in the Sierra. In 1970, they decided to trade the Los Angeles Basin for the beautiful Owens Valley, relocating Cal-Tron to Bishop. As a result of her never-ending appreciation for the outdoors, 4- to 6-hour day hikes in the Sierra would soon become her trademark. If you came for a visit, you better “bring your boots” because you were going for a hike.

Hospitalized with Rheumatic fever as a child, Collene became interested in medicine. This would lead to her vocation as a nurse, working first at Montebello Hospital near Los Angeles and then for over 40 years in the delivery room of Northern Inyo Hospital. Collene loved her patients and the positive experience of the OB Department. Collene retired only when her ongoing treatment for cancer made her work difficult.

In 1975, Collene obtained her private pilot’s license. A harrowing experience on the return leg of her solo flight from Tonopah left her without radio contact; thankfully, clear weather permitted following Highway 6 back to Bishop. The euphoria of being back on the ground did not match that of being in the air. Soon thereafter, Collene was taking the family Cessna to visit friends and relatives outside the Owens Valley.

Collene lived a life of giving, loving and faith. Teaching Sunday School at church, she touched young lives with stories from the Bible. Planning family get-togethers with homemade pies, cookies, bread and jams made any occasion special.

Her gifts and handwritten cards have let many people know how much she loved and appreciated them.

Collene is survived by her husband of 54 years, Dan Pool; daughter, Karen Leatham of Bishop; son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Tammy Pool of Duvall, Wash.; and son and daughter-in-law, Jonathan and Laura Pool of San Diego; grandchildren, Shane McNulty and his wife, Sarah, Christina West and her husband, Joey, all of Bishop, Jessica and Lindsay Pool of Duvall,  Casey Hanneman and her husband, Dereck, of Duvall, and Carter and Caroline Pool of San Diego; great-grandchildren, Austin, Taylie, Danica and Audriana, all of Bishop, and Kaiden of Duvall; brother and sister-in-law, Garth and Karen Long of Yuba City; and sister and brother-in-law, Gayla and Jim Chambers of Georgetown, Texas.

A memorial service will be held at noon on Saturday, Sept. 22, 2012 at the Presbyterian Church. Collene has requested, for those who wish, donations be made to Freedom in Motion Therapeutic Riding Center – www.freedominmotiontrc.org
