Fifth District Supervisor Richard Cervantes said he is endorsing candidate Jim Gentry in his race for a seat on the board next month.
In the June Primary, Cervantes ran against challengers Gentry and Matt Kingsley. None of the candidates generated the required 50 percent, plus one, of the votes to avoid a run-off, and, as Cervantes received the least amount of votes, he will not be on the November Ballot.
In response to questions he said he received from constituents, Cervantes said he took a hard look at both candidates before endorsing Gentry.
âAfter a thorough review of the qualifications of the candidates, it soon became apparent that both had served the community in various ways,â Cervantes said. âBoth have served on the school board and other civic organizations and are well known and popular.â
Cervantes said his decision hinged on âwhich of the two would best serve the interest of the people of the 5th District.â
âOne candidate is from Ohio and the other is from Lone Pine,â Cervantes continued. âOne of the candidates was a fedral employee, the other works for LADWP. Since the county of Inyo and DWP work together on a daily basis and are currently working on three major projects that will benefit ourcounty ⊠I would endorse Mr. Gentry for supervisor of the Fifth District of Inyo County.â
Cervantes did say, back in June, that he would fully support whichever of the two candidates is elected in November.
Gentry did not return phone calls seeking comment as of press time Wedensday.
Kinglsey said he is grateful for the support he has received from the community.
âI think the voters of the Fifth District are capable of independent decisions as evidenced by Richardâs poor showing in that same primary,â Kingsley said. âThis fall, voters will recognize my demonstrated leadership as a Fire Chief and School Board President. Theyâll understand my engagement in both civic and governmental organizations. These make me the best candidate to represent the Fifth District ⊠I wish the Cervantes/Gentry ticket the best.â
