Crystal Geyser in Olancha is looking to expand and residents have until October to comment on the proposed increase in operations.
In a Draft Environmental Impact Report, Crystal Geyser said it is proposing the construction of a spring water bottling facility on Cabin Bar Ranch near Cartago.
Cabin Bar spans U.S. 395 and is a total of 420 acres. The proposed project site includes about 34 acres in the north-central area of the ranch. About 14.59 acres would be subject to improvements.
“The project would construct a 198,500-square-foot bottling plant with four bottling lines and a 40,000 square-foot warehouse,” the DEIR states.
The company is proposing to draw groundwater from three on-site wells.
The company said it is proposing to pump a total of 170 gallons per minute from the three wells and up to 500 gallons per minute in the summer months. In all, it hopes to pump about 360 acre-feet of water per year.
Before the bottling plant is able to move forward with its plans, Inyo County must approve a General Plan amendment, changing the property from a Rural Protection and Rural Residential zone classification to a light industrial classification.
The county will also be required to issue a conditional use permit for the bottling facility.
If approved, Crystal Geyser said construction would take place over several years with possible further expansion in 2025.
Inyo County will be accepting comments on the DEIR through Oct. 1.
Those who wish to do so may send their comments to Ms. Tanda Gretz, Senior Planner, Inyo County Planning Department, P.O. Drawer L, Independence, CA 935266.
Comments may also be emailed to tgretz@inyocounty.us.
