Irene A. Evans Gardner

Mrs. Irene A. Evans Gardner passed away peacefully Monday, Aug. 20, 2012, in Santa Maria, after celebrating her 100th birthday on Saturday with all of her family and friends.

Irene was born Aug. 18,1912 in Murray, Utah, the second of seven children. While still a girl, she and her family moved to Bell, where the family operated a restaurant and she continued her education. On June 21, 1935, she married Francis D. Evans and within a few years they had their own home in Van Nuys, in the San Fernando Valley. During World War II, while Francis was in the United States Navy, Irene took care of her younger sisters and was deeply involved volunteering for the Red Cross.

In November of 1956 Francis and Irene and their two small children moved to Bishop, where Francis had been transferred with the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. A lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church, Irene was also a Cub Scout Den Mother and Girl Scout Troop Leader.

She enjoyed cooking, gardening and sewing.

After Francis passed away in 1981, Irene married Sidney L. Gardner in December, 1983. They were married until Sidney’s passing in 1998, when Irene moved to Santa Maria to live with her daughter Elaine Soto.

Irene was preceded in death by her husbands, Francis D. Evans and Sidney L. Gardner; and by six siblings.

She is survived by her son, Eddy Evans, of Bishop; and daughter, Elaine Soto; son-in-law, Daniel Soto of Santa Maria; grandchildren, Danny Soto and wife, Susan Soto, Gabriel Soto, Matthew Soto, Megan Evans, David Evans and Jonathan Evans-Dunaway; great-grandchildren, Aleah Shannon, Jarret Jarding and Paul and Eric Soto.

Private services will be held at a later date.

Arrangements are under the direction of Dudley-Hoffman Mortuary, Crematory and Memory Gardens.
