Lucretia ‘Tish’ Melvin Rockwell

1924-2012

Born Aug. 17, 1924 in Bradford, Penn. Lucretia “Tish” Melvin Rockwell died at Renown Regional Medical Center on Aug. 10, 2012 resulting from surgeries and heart problems.

She attended school in Bradford, Carlton College of Northfield, Minn. and University of Pennsylvania School of Occupational Therapy. She practiced as an occupational therapist for both adult Polio patients and disabled children in hospitals at Salt Lake City, Utah, Trenton in New Jersey, Bath, Maine and Buffalo, New York.

In 1955 she met a U.S. Forester by the name of Edwin “Rocky” Rockwell. They were married the same year at Twin Lakes Forest Chapel in Mammoth Lakes.

Rocky continued a 30-year career with the forest service while Tish became the cook at Mammoth Mountain Ski Area for a time. She then joined the U.S. Forest Service at the Mammoth Lakes Ranger District as a desk typist. Tish resigned her duties at the forest service when daughter Judith was born, followed by son, Bradford. Tish enjoyed a long period leading girl scouting troops, both while attending college, and later with her daughter Judy. She was later recognized for 30 years of young women’s leadership. Rocky retired from the U.S. Forest Service in 1980, and together they traveled extensively throughout the United States and Canada. Tish’s senior years were spent quietly with her husband in Bishop.

She is survived by her loving husband, Edwin Rockwell; daughter and son-in law, Judith and Dan Norris of Ontario, Ore.; son and daughter-in-law, Bradford and Christina Rockwell of Bishop; grandchildren, Garrett, Jennifer and Daryl and his wife, Kazia; an anticipated great-grandchild; and loving cousin she referred to as a sister, Shirley, of Florida.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her honor will be appreciated to Meals on Wheels in Inyo County, Girl Scouts of America and the First Presbyterian Church in Bishop.

Celebration of life services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Aug. 23, 2012 at the First Presbyterian Church on Elm Street, Bishop with light refreshments to follow in the church hall.
