 Elizabeth Louise Slee

Born Elizabeth Keeler on July 12, 1925 in Los Angeles, Betty passed away in Carlsbad on July 3, 2012. She was nearing her 87th birthday.

Betty was the only child of Edward Ernest Keeler and Ayleen Alice Keeler and was a fifth-generation California girl which shined through her with her love of the beach and swimming. She grew up in west Los Angeles and went to Beverly Hills High School. She was a medal-winning back stroke swimmer.

Her love for water led her to meet Kenneth Jex Slee, a lifeguard at Laguna Beach, who would later become her husband on Dec. 14, 1946. They lived in both Baldwin Hills and Santa Monica over the next 18 years and their family grew and grew. During that time they had seven children. Betty was an avid volunteer for the Children’s Hospital Auxiliary. As a family they camped in Tuolumne Meadows and they fell in love with the Owens Valley. They decided to move to Bishop with Betty’s dream of owning and operating a resort or Bed and Breakfast. After living in Bishop for a few years they purchased the Mountain View Motel which they owned for 25 years. All the while enjoying fishing, hiking, raising a family and all that the Owens Valley had to offer.

Betty and Ken later moved to Palm Desert where she volunteered at The Living Desert Reserve as a guide and they shared a love of golf. She has resided in Carlsbad for the past 14 years with her loving daughter Susan and her family.

Betty was always active and loved tennis, running and swimming. If Betty had a good cup of coffee and a great book, the day had promise. She had an amazing sense of humor and lived her motto “Life is but a Dream.” Betty always had a positive outlook on life and a fiery personality that will never be forgotten.

She was always the best at what she did and will be missed more than could ever be expressed. “A heart of gold stopped beating, two smiling eyes, He closed to rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best.”

Elizabeth was preceded in death by her father, Edward; mother, Ayleen; and her husband, Ken.
