The Lady Broncos soccer team members got an early taste of victory at a 6x6 tournament held in Irvine, June 30.
The 6x6 format is played on a small field, 50 by 40 feet, with five field players and a goal keeper. The game lasts 30 minutes with free substitutions similar to hockey.
âItâs a fun, fast-paced game with lots of action and usually quite a few goals,â said coach Cathy McKinley.
Each team played four games. The tournament winner is then determined by points allotted for wins and ties.
âWe lost our third game by one goal,â said McKinley. âThat meant we had to win our last game 5-0 to be able to win the tournament outright. It seemed like a difficult task as the competition was very good, but the girls were up for the challenge.â
The Broncos won the game 5-0 and claimed the tournament champions.
With many of McKinleyâs returning varsity players unable to attend the tournament, she substituted three upcoming freshmen as well as three sophomores, two juniors and one senior.
âFor having such a young team the girls played very well together,â said McKinely, commenting on the three frosh. âSydney Conn did an outstanding job in goal. Shelby McKinley played most of the time in defense but was able to score in our last game and Ritz Garcia came out strong scoring two goals for the tournament.â
According to McKinley, Jackie Garcia was very strong in defense. Brianna Coakley and Rory Lella worked hard in the offense.
âCassie McKinley was on fire scoring a total of eight goals,â said McKinlEy. âDalynn Kessler scored two goals with one from Alicia Campos.
âIt was an exciting day of soccer, and it felt good to bring home a winners plaque so early in the pre-season.â
