Mervin J. Sam
Mervin Sam, 48, a former longtime resident of the Owens Valley, passed away on May 30, 2012 in Reno, Nev. at Renown Hospital with his family at his side.
He was born on Sept. 1, 1963 to Carol A. Duckey and Roger Sam. He was then raised here in the Owens Valley by his Foster Mother Audrey Leonard and attended school in Big Pine. up until his family moved as he was entering his senior year in high school. Mervin then graduated from Utah Indian High School. Mervin made his way back to the beautiful Owens Valley that he had known and called home, and reunited with his sister, Patricia Dewey, and met her family for the first time.
Mervin enjoyed fishing the Owens Valley River and spending time with his family and teasing and laughing with his nephews and nieces. Another pastime of his was beading key chains, barrettes and just about anything he could get his hands on. As time went on, Mervin met his longtime companion, Nettie, who he had to keep him company up until her sudden death.
Mervin was preceded in death by his mother, Carol A. Duckey; father, Roger Sam; nephew, Clifford D. Dewey, Jr.; and his brother, Robert James Mallory.
Memorial Services will be held on Sunday, June 10, 2012 at 11 a.m. at the Barlow Lane Gym and following the services will be a potluck lunch also held at the Barlow Lane Gym.
Mervin is survived by his Foster Parent, Audrey Leonard of San Diego; sisters, Kathy Talas, Betty Sam, Sheri Sam of Carson City, Nev., and Patricia Dewey of Bishop; also numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunties and uncles.
