The Bishop Nursery Ghost Peppers crept past the Reds in Division C of the Bishop Adult Softball League action Tuesday night.
The division leader, Bad Company, wasn’t as lucky with a 1-17 loss to the BSers.
The Reds jumped out to a 0-4 lead in the top of the first. Taylor Neubauer scored the first run off a double from Earl Lent.
With two runners on and 2 outs, Darren Spoonhunter slammed an in-the-park home run to the fenceline to bring in 3 runs for the 0-4 lead.
The Peppers got off to a slow start in the bottom of the inning.
With three Peppers on base and 1 out, Christina Rico singled home the first team run.
Jose Rico hit an in-the-park 4-RBI homer to hit the 5-run limit, taking a 5-4 lead going into the second.
The second inning went runless with strong defensive play from both teams.
The Reds’ Ryan Lent singled home Willie Falck to tie the score 5-5 in the top of the third.
The tie was quickly broken when the Peppers’ Joe Rico started the bottom of the third with an out-of-the-park home run, giving the Peppers a 6-5 edge.
A 2-RBI single in the top of the fourth handed the lead back to the Reds at 6-7. The Peppers got out of the inning with a double play.
With two runners in position and 2 outs, Alonso Talamantes hit the third in-the-park home run of the game, scoring 3 runs and giving the Peppers the win at 9-7.
The second game of the night was a BSer rout of Bad Company.
Bad’s first inning was hopeful, with Rhandy Picard’s triple and run off a Meryl Picard single. But that 0-1 lead was the last ray of hope.
The BSer bats were on fire with 4 runs in the bottom of the first, another 4 in the second, 5 in the fourth and 4 in the fifth, all while shutting out the BSers.
