Edith was born Sept. 29, 1916 on her parent’s, William and Zoe Whitley, ranch near the small town of Bandera, Texas in the Texas hill country. She died May 22, 2012 at the age of 95 in the Bishop Care Center. Edith grew up and attended school in Bandera, and business college in San Antonio, Texas. She moved to Oakland in 1935 and lived with a sister.
She met and married Faye Clearwater from Portland, Ore. on Nov. 9, 1935. They moved to Los Angeles in 1936 where he was employed at General Motors. Three children were born to their union. In 1941 they purchased a home in Compton, and lived there until they moved to Bishop in 1971.
Edith was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Faye; daughter, Elaine Zoe Garrett; and son, William Clearwater.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Sally and Fred Manecke of Bishop; six grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
While her children were growing up, Edith was a “stay at home mom,” but was an active volunteer in church and school. She was a Girl Scout Leader, a den mother in the Boy Scouts, a PTA President and a deacon at the Presbyterian Church in Compton. When her husband Faye retired in 1971, they purchased their dream home in the Rocking K area near Bishop. They loved the high Sierra and spent many hours fishing at Lake Sabrina and South Lake. They also enjoyed traveling to Alaska, Hawaii and the Caribbean. As long as age and health permitted, Edith was an active volunteer at church, hospice, AARP 1514 and the Senior Center.
Memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 9 at the First Presbyterian Church in Bishop.
Donations in Edith’s memory may be made to the Hospice of the Owens Valley, 155 Pioneer Ln., Bishop, CA 93514.
