Bishop Bronco Brendon Shibley and Lone Pine’s Casey Sullivan moved on to round two of the CIF individual golf tournament, making the cut at Mission Lakes Golf Course Monday.
Sullivan, Shibley and Bishop golfers Joey Medora and Sean Mitton represented High Desert League on the par 71 Desert Hot Springs course.
The players were competing against a cut at 79 strokes. Sullivan finished with an impressive 2-over par at 73, Shibley with a 78 to qualify for the next round.
According to Lone Pine coach Terry Fenske, Sullivan made an eagle putt, putting him 1-under par.
Bishop’s Medora missed the cut with an 81, Mitton recorded an 89.
According to Bishop coach Shirley Ono, the golfers played in 100 degree temperatures on a course that played long with lightning fast greens. “It wasn’t uncommon to see three and four putts being made,” said Ono.
Sullivan and Shibley move on to play the next round of CIF in Riverside this Monday at Victoria Country Club with the other 30 players from this region.
The Bishop golf team faced a tough round one of team playoffs May 7 at Jurupa Hills Country Club.
Unlike other CIF brackets, golfers from small schools compete head-to-head regardless of school size.
As a team, the Broncos shot a 440 with Medora shooting the team’s low score of 77. The young CIF team did well given the fact that they had not played the tree-filled, sloping course before, according to Ono.
The Broncos finished 16th out of 19 teams.
“CIF reorganized the regional playoffs this year,” said Ono, “resulting in a much higher level of play at this first round.”
“The coaching staff is extremely proud of the entire team,” said Ono. “They have worked together this year to improve their skills and adhere to sportsmanship on the golf course.”
