As the dust settles on regular league play, the Bishop Lady Broncos JV softball team stands alone at the top of the High Desert League standings with a 9-1-0 record, 16-6-1 overall.
The single league loss was to Kern Valley, by 1 run.
The final win over Desert, 8-3 on May 10, marked the end of the JV team’s season.
“Desert played great defense,” said coach Patty Cummings, “leaving us scoreless at the bottom of the first, so the girls knew they needed to be aggressive at the plate, and that’s what they did.”
Tiarney Andreas singled in the second. Korina Toledo stepped up with a 2-RBI homer.
And the hits kept on coming. Kristen Stone gained first on a walk, setting the stage for a Tamia Shoshone 2-RBI homer to give Bishop a 4-0 lead going into the third inning.
The Scorpions narrowed the lead in the third, 4-3, but the Broncos answered back. Shelby Logan doubled, scoring on an Andreas triple. Toledo made it to first, bringing Logan home for a 6-3 lead.
The Bronco defense held strong, shutting down the Scorpions’ bats.
The offense added 2 insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth. Emma Baker singled and Shoshone smashed her second homerun out of the park.
In the top of the seventh, Toledo struck out the first Scorpion and threw out the second. The third batter grounded out to second baseman Tailor Marks who made the play to Shelby Hess at first for the final out of the game, and the season.
“It was a great season,” said Cummings. “I want to thank all the parents for their support along with assistant coaches Amanda Winn and Becca Shoshone.
“Also, thanks to Arlene Manuelito for pitching to the girls, Fawn Piper and Becky Allen for keeping score and Dan McElroy and his park crew. The girls were wonderful and I will miss them all.”
