Friday afternoon was not a bright spot for Lone Pine Golden Eagles’ fans.
The Boron Lady Bobcats leveled the Lady Eagles softball team 3-14. The baseball match-up wasn’t much better with a 9-15 loss for Lone Pine.
The combination of strong Boron teams and errors from Lone Pine was fatal.
“Our offense was good,” said baseball coach Chris Riesen, “we just have to work on our pitching and defense. We’re a competitive team but not an overpowering team. We can’t make mistakes. We had too many walks and too many errors.”
The Eagles took the early lead with a run in the first and two in the second. But, the Bobcats came back strong in the top of the third with four runs for a slim 3-4 lead.
Lone Pine’s Shayne Boots and Shane Riesen had ground ball singles in the bottom of the third but both were left stranded.
The Bobcats came on like gang busters in the top of the fourth with three straight singles. All three batters made it home to extend the Boron lead 7-3.
Lone Pine’s Mike Palsrok answered with a single, Mike Cappello walked and Boots sent Palsrok home with a single.
But, Boron’s offense went back to work with a 5-run inning, taking a 4-12 lead.
The bottom of the fifth was a big one for Lone Pine, just not big enough.
With 1 run, 2 outs and two runners on base, Palsrok walked to load the bases. Gabe Galndo hit a 1 RBI single; Mike Cappello brought another runner home and Boots’ single added the fourth run of the inning for the Eagles. With an 8-12 score, Lone Pine was still in the game.
A total defensive breakdown in the top of the sixth gave Boron an 8-13 lead. The Eagles snapped back with a double play from Boots to Galindo on first and a pop foul catch by Galindo to retire the side.
Boron had two more runs in the top of the seventh to take a 15-8 lead.
With a 7-run deficit and one more inning, Palsrok hit a single, making first base on sheer speed. Cappello hit a double to the fence line to score Palsrok, but was left on base with the final out.
“If we want to make the playoffs, we have to settle down and focus,” said Riesen. “We’re in a tough league.”

Mike Cappello: 4 innings, 5 strikeouts, 3 walks, 6 hits, 7 runs
Shayne Boots: 1 inning, 2 strikeouts, 5 runs
Umberto Romero: 1 inning, 5 walks, 2 runs
Seth Muniz:1 for 4, 1 run
Mike Cappello: 2 for 3 with a double
Mike Palsrok: 3 for 4 with a home run, 4 runs and 2 RBI
Milton Mendoza: 1 for 4, 1 run
Shane Riesen: 2 for 3, 1 run, 1 RBI
Tyler Sutton: 1 for 3, 1 run
Shayne Boots: 4 for 5 with 3 RBI
Gabe Galindo: 1 for 2 with 1 run

Lone Pine and Boron are two of the strongest softball teams in the Desert Mountain League. With their re-match coming up April 20, the Eagles have another chance to tame the Bobcats and avenge their 3-14 loss.
“We haven’t seen this level of competition before,” said coach Liz Jones. “We have a lot of work to do on both offense and defense.
The numbers tell the story: Lone Pine had 5 hits (one each from Zaida Luque, Deserae Coats, Samantha Riesen, Tania Dominguez and Amanda Barlese), Boron had 10; Lone Pine stole 2 bases, Boron 8; Lone Pine had 6 errors, Boron 2; Lone Pine had 5 strikeouts and 3 walks; Boron, 8 and 1.
Boron started slow with a single run in the top of the first. Short stop Larixta Ramirez ended the drive with back-to-back pop-outs.
The Eagles answered with a run by Luque off a Riesen single. A Dominguez single loaded the bases, but Bobcat pitcher Adrianna Volentine struck out the final two batters to limit the damage.
Boron bunted Lone Pine to death in the second, adding 5 runs for a 1-6 lead.
Behind 1-11 going into the bottom of the fifth, the Eagles avoided the mercy rule with 2 runs in the bottom of the fifth. Alyssa Lienemann’s single, on a Boron error, scored Luque. Lienemann scored Lone Pine’s final run on a Riesen triple.
Boron had three more runs left to end the game with a 3-14 win.
“The girls need to be even more determined to work hard at every practice,” said Jones. “We need to be ready for the rematch with Boron.”
