The Lady Broncos’ basketball season has been a rollercoaster ride and Thursday night the team hit the top of the ride.
The team has won games they weren’t supposed to and lost games by a hair.
Thursday night Bishop beat the number-one ranked Desert Lady Scorpions 41-35. With an 8-1 record and a lock on the High Desert League championship, Desert should have won. But, the Broncos, at 5-4, were fighting for a playoff berth and they got it.
Did we mention: the Scorpions are ranked 10th in the CIF Southern Section.
“Going into the game we talked about playing relaxed, focused and with confidence,” said first-year coach Brian Pennington. “They played their hearts out with some great defense, ball movement and unselfish play.”
The Scorpions didn’t look like league champions Thursday night, not up against a super-charged Bronco defense.
Katelyne Lent started the scoring effort for Bishop. Tamia Shoshone added the other 9 points for the Broncos’ first-quarter total of 11. The defense held the Scorpions to 5 lonely points.
Desert came back strong in the second quarter, outscoring Bishop 8-15. The Scorpions took advantage of their offensive rebounding talent to take a 1-point lead at the half, 19-20.
Bishop rebounded in the third quarter, retaking the lead for good.
Shoshone was golden all night with a game-high 23 points for a field goal percentage of 56 and three 3-pointers. Callahan was deadly on defense with 11 rebounds and 10 blocks.
Bishop went into the fourth quarter with a 29-22 lead.
The Scorpions made a run early in the fourth, narrowing the lead 29-25 but the Broncos retaliated with back-to-back buckets to regain a more comfortable 8-point advantage.
With less than 30 seconds left in the game, Desert narrowed the lead 39-35. Shoshone went to the free-throw line with 4.9 seconds on the clock, nailed her two buckets and put the game out of reach for the stymied Scorpions.
CIF playoff brackets will be announced Sunday afternoon.
