The Broncos basketball team lost, 48-40, in Kern Valley Friday.
After a strong 3-0 start in High Desert League, the Broncos have hit a rough patch on the road.
Injuries haven’t helped.Qui Barlow went out in mid-season with a knee injury and 6-foot-5 Darren Spoonhunter broke his hand in practice two days before the Kern Valley game.
Bishop’s defense against KV was strong in the second half, but the team’s offense never really kicked in.
Kern Valley went ahead 15-0 with Bishop’s first point, a free throw from Jerry Castillo, coming with two minutes left in the quarter.
That point opened up an 8-point drive by Bishop, ending with a 3-pointer from Jarred Ruelas.
The Broncos ended the quarter down by 9 at 8-17, a point deficit they never could close.
Bishop opened the second quarter with back-to-back 3-pointers from Kyle Miller and Ruelas. Then, Kern Valley ran up 10 unanswered points, ending the half with an 11-point advantage at 24-35.
The Broncos outscored Kern Valley by 3 points in the third quarter. The defense held KV to single-digit scores in the half, but the hole was too deep.
Bishop is tied for third place with Rosamond; the top three league teams are guaranteed a spot in the CIF playoffs. Bishop faces Rosamond tonight at 7:30 p.m. on home court and the HDL-leading Desert Scorpions come to town Thursday.
