The Lone Pine Golden Eagles volleyball squad got bitten by the Boron Bobcats at home Thursday, losing 1-3 (8-25, 25-23, 21-25, 19-25)
“Boron’s strong serving and stingy defense kept us rattled throughout the match,” said coach Mel Joseph. “We lacked the inspiration and desire to push points when the opportunity was there. Everyone had moments of greatness, just not at the same time and Boron took at advantage.”
Lone Pine served 95 percent as a team.
The Eagles got a taste of the lethal Bobcats’ serving in game one, dropping to 1-10 on Boron’s first serve. The Eagles could not mount enough of a rally to threaten Boron’s first game win.
Boron pulled ahead 2-5 in game two but the Eagles had adapted to the Bobcats’ aggressive style and kept pace.
Lone Pine gained momentum on a strong points-run during serves by Zaida Luque and Samantha Riesen, pulling ahead 11-9.
For the duration of game two, the two squads exchanged the lead until the last two points with the Eagles winning 25-23.
The Eagles’ choreography on the court looked sharp early in game three. Improving at the net, the Eagles had a 7-3 lead but lost it on a strong Boron service run that left the Eagles behind 10-7.
The Eagles retook the lead, but lost it on an 8-point serving spree by Boron. Lone Pine battled back but the points spread was too much to overcome with a final score of 21-25.
Down by 5 points in game four, the Eagles powered back to take a 10-7 lead with Luque on the service line and spectacular saves by Desarae Coats and strong support at the net by Rachel Martin.
Boron came back to tie the game 14-14, then went on another 6-point run, sending the Eagles scrambling to keep the ball in play. Final score 18-25.
Lone Pines’ record on the Varsity level: 2-4 in Desert Mountain League, 6-11 overall.
