According to the Owens Valley Cruisers car club, fall is one of the best times of the year to get behind the wheel and drive the winding roads of local canyons, and each year they invite classic car buffs from all over the West to join them as they bask in the fall colors.
The Owens Valley Cruisersâ 18th Annual Fall Colors Car Show will be hitting Bishop this weekend alongside the popular Choo Choo Swap Meet and the Altrusa Art Show and Sale.
Owens Valley Cruisers Registration Committee Member Denise Hayden said the car club wants everyone in the community to turn out and support the club and hundreds of participants, many of whom travel hundreds of miles just to attend the show and have an opportunity to cruise the Bishop Creek Drainage as the fall colors bloom.
The weekendâs festivities kick off at 4:30 p.m. Friday afternoon for early registration in a new location. In the past, early registration for the car show has been held in the Taco Bell parking lot at the intersection of Main and Yaney, but this year the group is moving over to the more spacious, lighted Vons/Kmart parking lot.
Early registration night has served as an unofficial cruise night, meet-and-greet and reunion for returning show participants, complete with entertainment and a first look at some of the classic hot rods, roadsters and muscle cars that will be on display Saturday at the Eastern Sierra Tri-County Fairgrounds.
Hayden said the Owens Valley Cruisers typically register 50-60 entries for the car show during the early registration, and many more folks show up just to hang out and enjoy the company of other car buffs.
The Fall Colors Car Show is open to all classic vehicles from 1974 and earlier.
The car show kicks off at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Tri-County Fairgrounds. Hayden said residents and visitors can expect to see more than 200 unique classic cars in dozens of categories.
Throughout the day, show participants will be touring the cars on display, voting on their favorites.
âItâs all peer judging, but weâre very careful that you donât get to judge in your own category,â Hayden said.
The Show and Shine will wrap up at about 3 p.m., at which time the California Highway Patrol will begin directing traffic on Main Street to make way for the Fall Colors parade, where residents and visitors will have the opportunity to see the various vintage cars in action on Main Street.
But before residents head out to Main Street for the parade, the Owens Valley Cruisers are inviting them to check out the other events going on at the Fairgrounds this weekend.
In addition to the Show and Shine, Bishopâs biggest yard sale will also be going on at the fairgrounds.
The Choo Choo Swap Meet features dozens of vendors selling just about anything under the sun, from cook wear to vehicles to artwork and entertainment.
Each vendor at the Choo Choo pays for a space to display their goods, with that money and gate proceeds from shoppers going directly to Laws Railroad Museum to help pay for upkeep and maintenance on exhibits.
The Choo Choo Swap Meet will be held from 8:30 a.m. to the early afternoon.
Residents and visitors will also have an opportunity to check out the 13th annual Altrusa Art Show and Sale Saturday and Sunday.
The art show boasts dozens of original works of art by local artists.
In addition to the artwork on display and for sale, Altrusa will be auctioning off an riginal Maryann Thomas watercolor painting titled, âLegends of the Fall 1.â Raffle tickets for the painting are available through Altrusa members at the show and at Union Bank in Bishop, where âLegends of the Fall 1â is on display.
The Altrusa Art Show and Sale will be held from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday and from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Sunday. The winner of the raffle will be announced at 2 p.m. Sunday.
Also on Sunday is the Owens Valley Cruisersâ poker run up Bishop Creek followed by the awards ceremony for the Show and Shine.
Hayden said everyone is welcome to participate in the poker run and attend the awards ceremony, where a PowerPoint presentation featuring photos of the winners of each category will be played.
