Carol was born Sept. 18, 1934 in Lovelock, Nev. to Mona Gracey and Carl H. “Bud” Walters of Independence and passed in Reno on Sept. 1, 2011 with family members at her side. The Walters family were an old pioneer family having settled at Camp Independence in 1869, and the Gracey family arriving in Independence in the early 1900s.
She attended Owens Valley Unified School until her marriage on Aug. 18, 1951 when, in Tonopah, Nev., she married William A. “Arnie” Cole, also of Independence, and they began their life together. She later went back to high school and graduated in June 1956.
Carol and Arnie had a total of six children, Marlene, Melanie, Mona, Michelle, Marci and Eric, and continued to live in Independence until 1974 when they purchased a hay ranch in Hammil Valley. In 1972 Carol and Arnie purchased Pine Creek Pack Station which Carol continued to run until 1984, after Arnie’s death in 1976. She was selected by the Mule Days Committee as most Honored Packer at the Mule Day Celebration in 2002.
Carol worked at many locations both in Independence, Austin’s Market where she was employed by her Uncle Robert Gracey, and in Bishop at Western Auto, Nick and Bob‘s Liquor, Josephs Market as the Lotto Lady, and the White Mountain Ranger Office on North Main.
Carol loved her family, the outdoors and the Sierra backcountry.
She is survived by her sister, Janis Seybert and husband Chuck of Desert Shores; sister, Sandra Jewett-Weigard of Granada Hills; brother, Carl J. Walters and wife Sandy of Vancouver, B.C., Canada; daughter, Marlene Taylor and husband Gary of Benton, and their children Galen Taylor, Kendra Cummings, Liana O‘Shea and Hayes Taylor; Melanie Logan of Milwaukee, Wis. and her children Dana Cole, Nathen and Damon Logan, Kelly Ann Peters and Michael Karaouni; Mona Cole of Reno and her children Trisha Miller and Jackie Cole; Michelle Scott and husband John of Bishop and their children Jeffery and Bill Rossi, Denise Holguin, Andrea Marshall, Colten and Clayton Scott; Marci Harris and husband Dave of Chalfant Valley and their children Carolyn Yount and Auline; son, Eric Cole also of Chalfant Valley, 34 great-grandchildren; and numerous other relatives and friends by whom she will be greatly missed.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 17 at the East Line Street Cemetery in Bishop followed by a potluck celebration of life at Carol’s home, 212 Mt. View, Chalfant Valley.
