Supes OK building at Bishop dump

County leaders approved a $75,000 project Tuesday that will get a long awaited project at the Bishop Sunland Landfill off the ground.
Using a local contractor, the county will install a new building at the gate of the landfill, providing handicapped accessibility, new restroom facilities and storage and work space for landfill employees.
Deputy Public Works Director Jeff Alstrom said the county received five bids for the project, which aims to erect a modular building at the entrance to the landfill along with a new sceptic system and water lines.
Taking the county’s local and small business preference, the bid was awarded to OzzCorp Builders, Inc. of Inyo County.
The project will be funded through the Integrated Waste Management Program, which has budgeted funds for the work.
“Integrated Waste Management has been waiting for this for a long time,” Alstrom said. “The $75,000 bid was on the low end of the engineer’s estimate for the project.”
The county had a used modular building donated for use at the landfill, however, that building proved to be too large for the gate house.
OzzCorp’s bid included having subcontractor Atlas Performance Industries, Inc. construct a 12-foot by 35-foot pre-fabricated modular building for the project.
Fifth District Supervisor Richard Cervantes pointed out that the total cost comes to about $178 per square foot. He said that was a high cost for a modular building.
According to Alstorm, about 35 percent of the cost of the project will be used to install sceptic system.
According to County Administrative Officer Kevin Carunchio, having a new building constructed for the gate house project will free up the modular building that was donated, which can be put to use elsewhere in the county.
“The other modular building may be used at the Lone Pine Sheriff’s Substation. And the sheriff has said it could be put to use at the Animal Shelter,” Carunchio said. “We should be able to find another use for it.”
