Final city softball tourney underway

The Chuckawallees/Bill Eddy Traditional Archery and Unloaded teams rose to the top at Friday evening’s first round of the City Softball League Coed C division championship tournament.
The teams, ranked in the middle of the six-team division, meet top-ranked CBC Crusaders and I-Hiimu this coming Friday in the semifinals. The title will be determined in the final game at 8 p.m.
Chuckawallees 10, Red Tails 5

The Chuckawallees jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first inning and never relinquished it.
With two runners on base, Robert Eddy singled in the first run. Sam Cortez loaded the bases, setting the stage for Eric Eddy’s 2-RBI base hit. With no outs, Tennielle Torres set off the next run-fest and the Chuckawallees hit their 5-run limit.
The Red Tails got off to a promising start with a double at the top of the order, but the Chuckawallees’ defense ended the inning with three consecutive outs.
The second inning was deja vu for the Chuckawallees. With two runners on, Sissy Root loaded the bases with a single. Wally Eddy sent a sacrifice fly soaring and two runners across home plate.
Callina Cortez loaded up the bases. Robert Eddy tried for a double but got tagged out at second, but sent in Root and Wally Eddy. Sam Cortez recorded her second hit in as many at-bats and sent in the fifth run of the inning.
The Chuckawallees went ahead 10-0.
The Red Tails answered with Gabe Hicks’ 1-RBI single to right field, taking a little bite out of the Chuckawallees’ lead at 10-1.
The teams played to a stalemate until the bottom of the sixth when Red Tails’ Robert Chavez singled in a run.
The Red Tails went into the seventh, open inning scoring three more runs.
With two outs, Cami Watterson loaded the bases, but the game ended with a pop-out and a 10-5 win for the Chuckawallees.
Unloaded 18, Nubeez 4
The Nubeezs’ Grant Hull put the first score on the board; Dixie Stewart brought in the second and the team took the early lead, 0-2.
Unloaded cut the lead in half when Chase Whitman sent a rocket deep into right field, bringing home Tony Alger.
Unloaded came back strong in the second. Mona Amado tripled in Keith Fuller to tie the game. Neal Jones stepped up and cleared the bases with a 2-RBI homer.
Hector Gonzalez’s base hit sent in the fifth and final run of the inning and Unloaded went ahead 6-2.
The Nubeez threatened in the bottom of the second. With two outs and two runners on base, Unloaded got the final out at first base, dousing the Nubeezs’ drive.
Unloaded added 2 runs in the third: a Tony Brown run off an Amado single; an Amado run off Whitman’s double.
The fourth inning was all Unloaded. Keith Fuller hit a 1-run homer. Neal Jones tripled in Carrie Jones, then scored on a fielder’s choice to put Unloaded ahead 11-2.
The Nubeez rallied in the fifth with 2 runs off Neil Watterson and Steve Barlow singles. Score: 11-4.
Unloaded added two insurance runs in the fifth off a Carrie Jones single.
The sixth inning turned into batting practice for Unloaded. Amber Richards tripled in 2 runs. Fuller hit his second homer of the night, this one a 2-RBI masterpiece. The fifth and final run came off Gonzalez’s bat, to give Unloaded a decisive 18-4 win.
