Just NDNs proved why it sits atop the City of Bishop’s Coed B League standings with an 18-7 win over Bad Company last Thursday.
Bad Company was game, putting up a challenge in the fifth and sixth innings, but fell victim to NDNs lethal bats and impenetrable defense.
NDNs goes into the single-elimination tournament, starting tonight, as the team to beat for the Coed B championship.
Adrian Santana started the scoring drive for Just NDNs in the bottom of the first, with a double and scramble to third on an infield error.
Bad Company’s Muff Scott handed NDNs its first out with a spectacular catch at third base. But Robert Summers took the wind out of the defense’s sails with a double that sent Santana across the plate.
The hits kept coming. Rebecca Andreas scored Summers with a left field double. Johnny Shoshone hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Andreas.
Teresa Harrison, Ken Lange and Kelli Braithwaite leveled hits past Bad Company’s defense and added two more runs to the scoreboard, putting NDNs ahead 5-0.
Bud Barlow and Derek Sierra got to base for Bad Company on a single and double, respectively, but were left stranded.
Bad Company pitcher Mike McDonald held NDNs scoreless in the bottom of the second.
McDonald sent a triple deep into left field in the top of the third for a a triple, then scored on a Scott sacrifice fly, narrowing the NDNs lead to 5-1.
Right-fielder Bud Barlow held the NDNs’ bats in check in the bottom of the third. But the NDNs came back strong in the fourth.
Santana doubled; Harrison singled, scoring Santana; Summers tripled, scoring Harrison. Summers snuck home for the third run of the inning and the NDNs extended the lead to 8-1.
In the top of the fifth, Bonnie Barlow hit a line drive single that glanced off the glove of the NDN’s third baseman. McDonald hit an in-the-park home run, chasing Barlow around the bases.
With two outs, Bud Barlow hit a double, but was taken out at third off a Scott single, ending Bad Company’s drive with the score at 8-3.
The NDNs answered decisively. With two runners on base, Suma Davis hit a 1-RBI single; Andreas followed with a 2-RBI single, then scored on a Rudy Madera single. The inning ended with the fifth run, Madera coming home on a Santana single. The NDNs had taken back Bad Company’s hits, and then some with a 13-3 score.
Bad Company bats had one more good inning. Sierra lead off with a double deep to center field. Ryan McVeitty send Sierra home with a double. McDonald helped his cause with a double, scoring McVeitty. Then Bud Barlow landed a 2-RBI double to narrow the NDN’s lead to 13-7.
In the bottom of the sixth, Harrison loaded the bases with a single to center field. Shoshone singled; Andreas tripled and the game ended with the 5-run limit and an 18-7 win for Just NDNs.
The Coed B Division begins tournament play today at Bishop City Park and continues Thursday with the final games July 26.
The Coed A Division starts its championship tournament Monday, July 25; Coed C Division, Friday, Aug. 5; and the Men’s Division, July 27.
