Harris Lester Riggins
No funeral services have been announced for 54-year Chalfant resident Harris Lester Riggins. His ashes will be spread by his family.
Born Dec. 22, 1927 to Walter and Dorothy Riggins in Brawley, Harris died of complications from prostate surgery on March 15, 2011. He was 83.
Being the son of a miner, Harris’ family traveled back and forth between Arizona and California before coming to the Owens Valley, settling in Chalfant in the mid ’40s. Harris attended Bishop Union High School before graduating in 1945. He served in the Korean War. Eventually, he met and fell in love with Patricia and they were married on Jan. 19, 1967. Together they had three children, Jammie, Harris, Jr. and Kenneth.
Harris was a member of the White Mountain Fire District; later the Chalfant Volunteer Fire Department. For more than 30 years before retiring, he was a captain and an EMT. He was also employed at Union Carbide Vanadium Mine for 30 years, serving 26 years as a mill shift foreman and then later as a consultant for Stratcor Mines Division A. Later he was employed and worked as a security guard and EMT for Canadalaria Mine in Nevada for three years before finally taking his full retirement.
In between all this, Harris was a partner with Elmer Louvlace in raising rabbits. He managed a firewood business, working after work and on the weekends gathering wood. He even managed to recondition washing machines and dryers, trained by his brother Lewis, who is a refrigeration and appliance technician.
Harris enjoyed pinion nut hunting, pitching horse shoes with his friends, even traveling to Bakersfield, winning second place world champion in the Senior division. He also enjoyed firewood gathering (it was said that he was like a kid in a candy store when hunting for wood), and deer hunting with his two sons, Harris and Kenneth.
He will be greatly missed by his family and long-time friends of the Owens Valley.
Harris was preceded in death by his father and mother; and sister, Clair Riggins.
Harris is survived by his wife of 44 years, Patricia; sister, Alice McCarty of Doty, Wash.; Lewis Riggins of Washington; son, Edward Riggins of Henderson, Nev.; daughter, Jammie Johnston of Bishop; Harris, Jr. of Malibu; and Ken Riggins of Chalfant.
