Ila Bessie Connell (Haslam)
Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 2 at the First Baptist Church in Big Pine for Ila Bessie Connell (Haslam).
Born Aug. 13, 1922 in Palos Verdes to Warren B Haslam and Edna D. Robinson Haslam, Ila, a beloved grandmother, aunt, cousin and friend, died March 20, 2011.
Ila was the last survivor of seven children.
She attended Lomita Elementary, Narbonne High School and Compton College. She moved to Winchester after college. She worked at Camp Hahn during World War II and then at March Air Force Base after the war, where she met her future husband.
Ila married David S. Connell in 1946 and lived in Perris and then Arlington, where they raised their two children, Davie and Janet and foster daughter Denice.
During her later years, Ila and David returned to Perris, working with the Perris Historical Society. Upon retirement, they moved to Big Pine to live near her daughter and son-in-law and their family.
She enjoyed traveling, playing games and getting together with family and friends.
Ila met annually with “the gang,” her friends from high school, for parties and traveling.
She will be greatly missed by anyone who ever met her, including her family, friends and former classmates and her extended church family.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, David S. Connell; son, David Shannon Connell, Jr.; daughter, Janet Marie Connell Strickler; and son-in-law, Michael Francis Strickler.
She is survived by her granddaughter, Sally Strickler; granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Ila and Dirk Vradenburg; nine great-grandchildren, Heather, Jessica, Tssiuvvu, Harlan, David, Melissa, Paakuâ€™u, Deborah and Derek; four great-great-grandchildren, Jazmin, Adrian, Kelsey and one that is still on the way; many nieces, nephews, cousins and her extended family, Rory, Angela, Mark and Samantha Scott.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the First Baptist Church, 293 Chestnut Street, Big Pine, CA 93513 or the Perris Historical Society, 227 N. D., Perris, CA 92570.
