Born April, 1914 in St. Joe, Mo. to Frank and Florence McCumber, Leilah died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2011 at Bel Air Lodge Convalescent Hospital. She was 96.
At the age of 6, her family moved to Los Angeles. In 1953, she moved to Bishop. She had lived in Lakeport for 10 years and then Turlock for about six years. Leilah had attended Church of Christ congregations everywhere she lived. She was invited to the 1932 Olympics as a sprinter and played semi-pro softball. Juanita was the starting pitcher in “League of Her Own” in Los Angeles.
Leilah enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and cruised to several destinations. Also she enjoyed hiking, beach combing and collecting antique bottles. She was the president of the Antique Bottle Club of Bishop. God and family were her life.
Leilah is survived by her children, Margie Williams of Turlock, Jacquelyn Lorimor of Oregon and Robert Gary Litchford of Tennessee; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions in Leilah’s memory may be to any Church of Christ of one’s choice.
