A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 26 at Grace Lutheran Church, 711 N. Fowler St., in Bishop for James “Jim” Harvey Gooch. Pastor Kent Puls will officiate.
Born June 6, 1941 in Holtville, Jim died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2011 at Ridgecrest Healthcare Center. He was 69.
Jim spent his early years in Brawley and moved to Modesto while in high school. Jim and Pat were married in 1963 and had two girls, Suzanne and Julie.
Jim started his career as a surveyor working on the California Aqueduct with California Deptment of Water Resources. He moved to Bishop in 1971 and began working at Inyo County in surveying and engineering. He was a Registered Civil Engineer and retired in 1998 as Public Works Director and Road Commissioner. He loved Inyo County and enjoyed working with all his co-workers. He moved to Ridgecrest in 2009.
Jim enjoyed cooking, photography and target shooting. He especially liked to sing and had a deep resonant voice. He sang in the church choir for more than 30 years and also in a gospel quartet. He was a Sunday school teacher and youth counsellor while his girls were growing up. After retirement Jim enjoyed travelling the country in his RV with Pat and his children and grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Herschel and Ruth Gooch.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Pat of Ridgecrest; daughters, Suzanne Clark and husband Bryan of Ridgecrest; and Julie Cheshire and husband Tom of Bishop; sister, Kathleen Gooch of Modesto; five grandchildren, Jennifer Clark of Ridgecrest, Brandon Clark of Ridgecrest, Dan Cheshire of Big Pine, Doug Cheshire of San Diego and Ellice Cheshire of Reno; a nephew and niece and many cousins.
Donations may be made to charities of one’s choice or to Calif. State Parks Foundation.
