Delores Faye Buff
Funeral services for Delores Faye Buff will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 29, 2011 at the Methodist Church in Independence with graveside services to follow at the Independence Cemetery. A viewing will be held from 5-8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 28, at the Mt. Whitney Funeral Home in Lone Pine.
Born Aug. 31, 1936, in Schurz, Nev., Delores died Jan. 19, 2011, in Lone Pine.
Delores lived the majority of her life in the Owens Valley. She attended the Milton School of Fort Independence. She then attended the Escuela Indian High School in Tucson, Ariz. Later on in life, she attended Flavio School of Cosmetology, then received an Associate Degree in Business from Cerro Coso Community College in Bishop. She served as Secretary of the Inter-Tribal Council of California, Matron for the Inyo County Sheriff’s Department, Nurses Aide at the Lone Pine Nursing Home, Community Health Nurse for the Toiyabe Indian Health Project, Inc., plus numerous other jobs.
She is a member of the Ft. Independence Pauite-Shoshone Tribe of Ft. Independence. Along with other Tribal Elders, she was an original signer of the Tribe’s Governing Laws. She had held positions such as Tribal Chairperson and Secretary-Treasurer, and was an active participant of the Tribe up until her death.
Her loves were gardening, cooking, her family and friends. She loved people, talking and laughing with all. She loved the Owens Valley and loved riding up and down the valley as “shotgun rider.” She would make the doctors laugh, because she would always say, “I am fine,” even though she was in pain. She never wanted to trouble anyone. Even though she was on Social Security, if anyone needed help, she was willing to give what she could.
Delores was proceeded in death by her mother and father, Truman and Clara Shaw Buff; brother, Harold Dean Buff; and partner, Joe Bellas.
Delores is survived by sister, Dorothy Buff of Independence; son and daughter-in-law, Dink and Valerie Knox of Independence; daughters, Diana Knox of Independence and Paulette Buff of Arizona; her partner, Luis Ramon; step-daughter Vicky Cross of Bishop; stepson, Steve Bellas of Lone Pine; grandchildren, Cassie of Spokane, Wash., John of San Francisco, Shane of Independence, Tazenupa Benson and partner Marc St. John of Arizona and Cecilia and Julisa Ramon; great-grandchildren, Timothy St. John and Justice Knox; extended family members, Ronald and Jane Knox of Arizona and many relatives and friends of Nevada and Arizona.
In lieu of flowers, contributions to cover funeral costs may be made to the Mt. Whitney Funeral Home.
