It’s not every day that residents of the Eastern Sierra are afforded the opportunity to watch – and hear – world-class musicians perform at no cost to the public.
Local sponsors are making it possible for the prestigious and popular United States Air Force Band of the Golden West to hold a free concert Saturday, Feb. 12 at 7 p.m. at the Lone Pine High School Auditorium.
The concert band, a 45-piece ensemble from the Air Force Band of the Golden West, will perform a variety of music, including classical, big band, contemporary and patriotic arrangements.
The band has performed at gubernatorial inaugurations and presidential visits, and band members have worked as touring or session performers for renowned artists such as Toni Tennille, Marvin Stamm, Bob Hope, Jimmy Stewart, Billy Dee Williams, Rich Little, Joan Rivers, Rosemary Clooney, the Omaha Symphony, the Guy Lombardo Orchestra, the Jan Garber Orchestra, the Noteables Jazz Ensemble and the Boston Brass.
The group performs more than 500 shows annually for roughly 1.5 million listeners. Memmbers play in civilian communities throughout California, Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Nevada, and also support events at 10 Air Force Bases, five Air Force Reserve Wings and five recruiting squadrons.
The Band of the Golden West, stationed at Travis Air Force Base, is the only remaining active duty Air Force band west of the Rockies.
