Get ready to 'Explore Your Universe'

It’s that time of year again. Fall is on its way, and its impending arrival marks the return of the popular “Explore Your Universe” lecture series, featuring talks by prominent astronomers sharing their research and discoveries.
The Owens Valley Radio Observatory and Cerro Coso Community College invite the public to attend their first installment of the 2014 edition at 7 p.m. this Thursday, Sept. 18, when Dr. Christopher Greer from the University of Arizona gives a talk titled “Imaging a Black Hole: From the Owens Valley to the South Pole.”

Tatum takes the reins

New City Administrator Jim Tatum recently talked about his first weeks in office and his plans for the immediate future in his first report before the Bishop City Council.
At the Sept. 8 meeting, Tatum began with gratitude for the “phenomenal reception” city staff has given him and went on to include topics concerning the city budgets and development of the business community.

BREAKING: Power outage cuts off cell service

A power outage stemming from a Southern California Edison system failure in Silver Canyon cut off cell phone service for AT&T customers and KIBS/KBOV radio in Bishop.
Phone calls to Edison seeking information on the outage were not returned as of press time Friday. A representative of KIBS/KBOV said the outage began at 6 a.m. Friday, and at that time, Edison said it would last about six hours. However, power remained out as of 4 p.m. Friday.

City says farewell to Skandar

Local artist and videographer Alex “Skandar” Reid received the City of Bishop Certificate of Recognition this week before heading across country to work on a project in Florida.
Reid accepted the certificate and a round of compliments and well wishes Monday night from the City Council, which listed Reid’s many accomplishments on behalf of the city and the community.

Road sabotage under investigation

Hazards appearing on dirt roads in the Lone Pine area have local officials concerned for the safety of off-highway vehicle riders.
The Inyo County Sheriff’s Department, Los Angeles Department of Water and Power and Bureau of Land Management are currently investigating a case of possible vandalism in the Pangborn area near Lone Pine, as someone appears to be placing large rocks and boulders in the middle of a network of dirt roads.

‘Fallen Heroes’ mural in the works

On the 13th anniversary of 9/11, Bishop Mural Society President Gail Swain unveiled the design for the society’s latest project, a fallen hero-themed mural dedicated to Bishop Police Officer Richard Eugene Perkins.
Swain presented the mural design at the regular Bishop Lions Club weekly lunch meeting. She explained the significance of the mural, and then announced the society’s need for community support in terms of monetary and volunteer contributions.

Fire closes U.S. 395 at Conway Summit

The Conway Fire, detected earlier this afternoon, has grown to 40 acres. The fire is displaying rapid rates of spread.

The fire is located at the base of Conway Summit on the west side of Highway 395. There are no structures threatened at this time; however, there are power lines are nearby.

Highway 395 (northbound and southbound lanes) is closed for the fire response. There is no estimate at this time for when the road will re-open.

There are numerous fire resources on scene including:

• 5 Engines
• 1 Water Tender
• Air Attack

Fire at printing facility delays Thursday IR

By now it's come to most readers' attention that the Thursday, Sept. 11 edition of the Register is late. Last night a fire broke out at the printing facility in Carson City. We have been told the papers will arrive by 10 a.m., and our carriers will begin delivering them as soon as possible. We offer our apologies for the inconvenience and are keeping Sierra Nevada Media Group in our thoughts.
