Obituaries 5-17 E-mail
Monday, 19 May 2008
The following is a complete listing of obituaries that appeared in the May 17 edition of The Inyo Register.
Frank J. ‘Joe’ Redmond
1924-2008

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, May 20, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church on Home Street in Bishop for Frank J. “Joe” Redmond. A viewing will be held from 2-5 p.m. on Monday, May 19 at Brune Mortuary, 325 West Elm St. in Bishop. A rosary at 6 p.m. will follow.
Joe was born in Terra Haute, Ind. to Frank Redmond and Lillian Warren Redmond on June 12, 1924 and moved to California when he was 2 years old.  He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the 85th Infantry in North Africa and all the way up Italy. He married his “Ginny” (Virginia L. Knowles) in October of 1948 and shared many happy adventures during their 52 years of marriage, including raising four children.
“He was a very proud and dedicated husband and father, teaching us all to be honest and ethical and respect the outdoors and wildlife,” his family said.
Joe’s professional life included working on the Apollo Space program for North American Aviation and serving as a reserve sheriff’s deputy for Los Angeles County before joining the Inyo County Sheriff’s Department in May of 1964 as a deputy sheriff.  Joe rose through the ranks of sergeant, lieutenant, inspector and assistant sheriff before his retirement in 1984. He also is famous for forming “Redmond’s Raiders,” Inyo County’s first SWAT Team. It was an outfit he was very proud of, even though he may not have mentioned that fact to the “Team.”
Joe was also a Combat Pistol Champ of the Bishop Gun Club throughout the 1970s, setting and breaking many of his own records.
His later years were spent hunting, fishing and generally exploring the Western United States and Alaska with his wife, children and grandchildren.
All in all, he had no regrets, was dearly loved by his family and respected and admired by his peers. He will always be Joe; he touched a lot of folks.
Joe was preceded in death by his “Ginny” in 2000 and is survived by his four children, Bonnie Bernard of Bishop, Mike and Judy Redmond of Santa Clarita, Debbie and Marco Acquistapace of Las Vegas and Patty and Lloyd Nicoll of Gardnerville, Nev. Joe also had 10 grandchildren, Jennifer, Jamie, Joanie, Joe, John, Nick, Matt, Rebecca, Kenny and Cheryl; and five great-grandchildren, McKenzie, Tyler, Reagan, Conner and Virginia.
