Valdon Cameron
1938-2008

Services will be held at 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 17 at 2759 Audrey Ln. in Bishop for Valdon Cameron. Rusty McKinley will officiate. Family will be welcoming visitors May 16, 17 and 18.
Born May 27, 1938 in Greeley Colo., Val died May 6, 2008. He was 69.
Val loved his work. He was a great mentor to many teachers and students for 40 years at Madison Middle School in North Hollywood. Many people work for a paycheck, few love what they do as wholeheartedly as Val did. He was truly dedicated to education.
After retirement, in 2000, he moved close to his grandkids in Bishop. “We worried about a busy Val being retired and getting bored but it was only a short time before he began teaching 5th through 8th graders on the Lower Owens River Project,” said his family.
Soon after moving to Bishop, Val met his good friend CJ. Together they boated and fished, and fished, and fished.
It was a sad day for Val and his family when CJ passed away a few years back. “We are sure they are together fishing now,” the family said.
Val and his wife Betty have enjoyed their grandsons Terren and Rusty. When they first moved to the area Terren was in half-day kindergarten (he is now 15) and often got picked up and treated to ice cream. Rusty (now 12) was just 3 when his mother Xan began working part-time. She never had to pay much for Grandpa (and Grandma) day care. With their Grandpa, the boys caught many fish and often went boating on warm days. Val laughed when people would see him and say, “Oh, you’re Rusty’s Grandpa.” As they grew, Grandpa fixed bike tires, toys and helped with school projects. He loved to attend hockey, soccer and baseball games, swim meets and Boy Scout activities, not to mention squid and cow eye dissection days at school. The boys were so fortunate to have gotten to know their Grandpa and share his love of science and of life.
Before and after retirement Val and Betty traveled often to see Chad in Colorado.
When his son Chad bought his house on the lake the first thing he got was a little fishing boat – not for himself, but for Val. Val would also drive the ski boat and pull Chad skiing and the kids on an inner tube. Val always enjoyed times in Colorado with Chad.
Val and Betty enjoyed their retirement time together. They achieved a long time desire to visit New England in the Fall.
They headed to Massachusetts to visit friends and admire the beautiful scenery. Every year after, they planned a trip together. Highlights included a three week river boat tour of Europe, Amsterdam to Vienna, an Alaskan Cruise and a trip to Australia.
In 2006 the family, Chad, Xan, Patrick, Terren and Russ, went to Mexico together.
“It was great to have the occasional family trip. Our most comforting feelings are around their most recent trip,” the family said. In October 2007 they took a fantastic road trip. They went to the Grand Canyon and walked on the Glass Bridge, stopped in Sedona to see a high school classmate and ended with the Albuquerque Balloon Festival where they took a balloon ride. Val was so healthy and strong.
It was November when the pain began in his leg. In March of this year Val was diagnosed with a soft tissue cancer (Sarcoma). It hit hard and progressed fast and quickly spread to his lungs.
Val’s favorite retirement activity was being a ham radio operator and “running” the nightly 8 p.m. “net.” He was the “Net Control,” The Voice of the Owens Valley. The “net” is a local nightly conversation on ham radio. He also was of service to many in the community by offering rides to the senior center for lunch. He would leave early to pick up his friends and go to lunch. He really enjoyed making the rounds daily.
“Val was an amazing person. We are overwhelmed with the deep and touching letters that keep coming to the house. Thank you all for your love, support and prayers,” said the family.
Val is survived by his wife, Betty; son, Chad; daughter, Xandra; son-in-law, Patrick Maddock; and two grandchildren, Terren and Russell Maddock.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Hospice of the Owens Valley, 155 Pioneer Ln. “We are so grateful to them for easing Val’s pain and helping us care for him,” the family said.
