Lone Pine High School track and field competed in the Desert Mountain League finals on Thursday, May 1 against Boron, Silver Valley and Desert Christian at Cerro Coso Community College in Ridgecrest. Twenty-one of 22 track entries resulted in season-best times, and five of 11 field entries matched that. Five Eagles earned a place in the CIF Prelims today.
Kaoru Mullenhour leads the way with two events. He came in second in the 100-meter dash in 11.2 seconds, two-tenths faster than his season best. He also long jumped 18-feet, 2-inches for second place and a qualifying mark. Obed Espindola ran a gutsy race, 11:46 for 3200 meters, good for second place and a trip to CIF, and he knocked 15 seconds off his 1600-meter time a few hours earlier. Andrea Ripoyla confirmed her improvement in the discus by winning for the second week in a row, punching her ticket to CIF. Her teammate and fellow junior Celia Acevedo finally put together the 300-meter hurdle race she’s been dreaming about all season, taking first place in 54.5 seconds, just under the CIF qualifying time as well. The last qualifier is junior high jumper Jordan Green. His 5’ 6” clearance was a best by four inches, leaving him in second place and right on the CIF qualifying standard. He was just as happy about his third place in the high hurdles earlier. Behind the qualifiers were 16 more athletes who met or exceeded their goals. Nick Obregon ran a career best in both the 1600 and 3200 meter races, and senior Ashlei Ripoyla ran legs on the girls’ two season-best relay efforts. Freshman Josafat Luna ran two personal bests at 400 meters and in the intermediate hurdles; freshman Sawyer Entwistle carved 26 seconds of his 1600 meter best; freshman Dylan Lienemann improved at 800 meters and ran his fastest 4 x 400 meter relay leg of the season by eight seconds; freshman Julie Allen got under a minute for the first time in the 300-meter low hurdles; freshman Briea Emory crashed-out in the high hurdles, came back to equal her best low hurdle time, and then ran her best 4 x 400 meter anchor leg; and sophomore Juan Rivera ran legs on the boys’ two season-best relay teams. The Division IV CIF Prelims are today, May 10, at Carpinteria High School. This meet is open to all CIF-Southern Section leagues with schools of enrollment of 1,000 or less. |
