If the definition of the word “heartbreaker” includes losing an 11-inning game by one run, then the Bishop High varsity softball team got their hearts broken after a 2-1 High Desert League game at Kern Valley on Tuesday.
“Actually, we did an outstanding job, I’m very proud of the girls,” said Lady Broncos coach Stacy Van Nest. “We especially played outstanding defense.”

Van Nest mentioned a number of players for outstanding defense: Shortstop Jazmin Rossi for throwing out a runner at home in the first inning, keeping Kern Valley scoreless; pitcher Tee-Ah-Ni Stone, who caught a bunt in the air then doubled up a runner at first, and, Stone and first baseman Megan Mather who teamed up for two double plays; the infield in general when a runner got in a pickle and Bishop recorded the out a number of  rotations later; and Kelsea Galvin who made a nice play on a grounder and then leaped to tag out the runner going from first to second.
“And, that’s just a few of the good defensive plays we made  that day,” Van Nest added.
With Kern Valley ahead, 1-0, and Bishop going into its final at-bat, Jenny Baker led off with a base hit, Jazmin Rossi hit a fielder’s choice to eliminate Baker, then Tashina Chavez had a base hit to station Broncos at second and third.
Kelsea Galvin, as she has before, responded in a pressure situation and rapped Bishop’s third base hit of the inning, scoring Rossi and sending the game into extra frames.
Junior Tee-Ah-Ni Stone worked a full day, throwing all 11 innings and giving up 2 runs on 7 hits and 4 walks and striking out 12.
“Tee-Ah-Ni did an awesome job,” said Van Nest.
At the plate, senior left fielder Baker went 2-for-5, “running out two grounders to shortstop,” said Van Nest; Kelsea Galvin, the Broncos’ junior second baseman, went 1-for-5 and drove in the only run; while senior right fielder Sarah Brown, junior first baseman Megan Mather, senior catcher Alisha Tiner, junior center  fielder Chelsea Galvin and junior third baseman Chavez all had one hit.
Bishop, at 6-3 (13-9-1 overall) and third in the HDL, hosts 7-2 Rosamond today at 3:15 p.m.
“If we play like we did against Kern Valley we should beat them (Rosamond),” Van Nest concluded.

Junior Varsity

Handing the junior Lady Broncos only their third loss of the season, two by Kern Valley, the Broncos beat Bishop on Tuesday, 15-5.
Ana Cummings went 2-for-3 with a double and 2 scores; Katie Manuelito, Betty Jo Whitman, Neredia Lopez and Emma Williams all batted 1-for-2, with Manuelito adding 1 score, Whitman a score and an RBI, Lopez 1 stolen base,  and Williams an RBI; and Michelle Franks went 1-for-4 and scored once.
The Bishop JV softball team is now 7-2 in league, 15-3 for the season.
